Dr. Delbert L. Chumley,  MD, FACP

Dr. Delbert L. ChumleyBorn and raised in San Antonio, Dr. Chumley attended Central Catholic High School and has spent the last three decades in private practice. Although he has special interest and training in therapeutic endoscopy for hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and sphincter of Oddi disorders, he also has extensive expertise in treating patients with Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Dr. Chumley has held several hospital and professional appointments and remains very active in organized medicine, legislative advocacy, and the development of medical education programs. He presently is the Secretary for the American College of Gastroenterology, President of the Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, and President of the Bexar County Medical Society. He also has served as President of the Texas A&M Medical & Dental Society and of the UTMB Internal Medicine Alumni Association. He continues to help train gastroenterology fellows and maintains a clinical faculty appointment of Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He and his wife of over 30 years, Louise, are the proud parents of three adult children, Chris, Keith, and Natalie.

 






Dr. Jerald Winakur, MD, FACP, CMD

Dr. Jerald WinakurJerry Winakur graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1973, completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the UTHSCSA in 1976, and has practiced internal and geriatric medicine in San Antonio, Texas for over thirty years, currently with Pasteur Medical Associates, the group he founded in 1990.  He is an Associate Faculty member at the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at the University of Texas Health Science Center and lectures in Humanities at the University of Texas and Trinity University in San Antonio.  He and his wife, the lawyer-poet Lee Robinson, co-teach the seminar, “Being Human:  Contemporary Issues in Science, Medicine and Society.”

In 2005, Dr. Winakur’s essay, “What Are We Going To Do With Dad,” appeared in Health Affairs and The Washington Post and was syndicated in newspapers across America.  He has been interviewed on The Diane Rehm Show and Fresh Air with Terry Gross as well as other syndicated radio shows.  He authors a monthly column, “Meditations on Medicine,” in LifeTimes, and continues to speak and lecture to both lay audiences and health care professionals on the ethical caregiving of our senior citizens.

His book, “Memory Lessons: A Doctor's Story”, forthcoming from Hyperion Press in 2008, is a memoir-manifesto about his life as a geriatrician, a commentary on aging and medical care in America, and the trials and joys of being the son of an old, old man.





Dr. Mary Pat Moyer, Incell CEO and Chief Science Officer

Dr. Mary Pat Moyer is a recognized biomedical scientist, entrepreneur and technology business leader. She founded the biopharmaceutical company, INCELL Corporation (1993), which is focused on her areas of expertise: regenerative medicine and infectious disease. INCELL innovations developed by Moyer and her colleagues are moving personalized medicine from the lab to the clinic. In regenerative medicine this includes cryopreservation storage of adult stem cells for multiple potential therapeutic applications in surgery, tissue repair and disease intervention, and the use of a patient’s own tumor cells to define customized therapies. Infectious disease targets include new diagnostics, non-needle vaccines and other treatments against viruses and bacteria, including smallpox, influenza, HIV, Brucella, and many others. By spearheading a Texas and international initiative BIO-MAP, the Bio-Manufacturing Alliance Partners, Moyer intends to accelerate manufacturing of biomedical products such as vaccines, therapeutics and devices. Moyer has served as a Consultant to national and international government agencies (e.g., WHO, NIH, NASA, DoD), universities and industry, published over 200 scientific papers and abstracts, and co-authored a textbook "Colon Cancer Cells". She is also a published poet. Her education includes BS/MS degrees in biology from Florida Atlantic University, a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin, and much “O.J.T" over a 40-year career. She remains Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she has held multiple appointments since 1981, most recently as Director, Center for Human Cell Biotechnology, Division Head of Surgical Research, and Professor of Surgery, with adjunct appointments in Microbiology, Cellular and Structural Biology, Pediatrics, and Molecular Medicine.

Some selected awards and appointments are 2008 national Stem Cells Summit speaker, one of the THBI “2006 Ten Top Texas CEOs” of the Texas Bio-Industry, SAWCC 2007 “Women of Voice and Vision”, International Centre for Infectious Disease board, Canada (2005-pres), SABJ “Healthcare Hero” (2006), national NIH Biodefense Product Development Working Group, 2006 Alamo Workforce Leadership, 2004 international Athena Award for Women in Leadership, 2006 West SACC Doctoral Achievement Award, Texas Workforce Investment Council (2004-07). Other recognition includes Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, "Faces of the Medical Community", "Innovative Small Business Leader", UTSA Management of Technology, and multiple research grants and contracts. Moyer is Founder and President of the San Antonio Austin Life Sciences Association (SALSA; www.bio-salsa.org), works passionately as a technology community activist for Texas and San Antonio, has co-founded several other companies, and serves on the boards of many for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. She and her husband and business partner, James Janowiak, have 3 adult children, Amy, Nicholas, and Jessica





Ann Stevens, President, BioMed SA

Anne StevensAs President of the newly formed non-profit corporation, BioMed SA, Ann Stevens brings a unique combination of experience in the biomedical field, investment community and media industry - along with a collaborative leadership style and a passion for community service - to her new role of organizing and promoting San Antonio's network of healthcare and bioscience assets. Previously, Stevens spent eight years as Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations for ILEX Oncology, Inc., San Antonio's first public biopharmaceutical company. She was a key member of the leadership team that raised the market capitalization of this homegrown, startup company from under $100 million to its final acquisition price by Genzyme Corporation of $1 billion in December 2004.

While at ILEX, Stevens participated in getting two new anti-cancer drugs approved by the FDA, representing new hope for patients with leukemia, and experienced first-hand the difference this industry can make in people's lives. She also developed a strong working knowledge of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, partnering with other drug companies and interfacing regularly with peer companies, investors and physicians at national medical meetings and investment banking conferences.

Prior to joining ILEX, Stevens spent 17 years on the corporate staff of global media firm, Harte-Hanks, Inc., where she served as Director of Corporate Communications. She began her career as a reporter for two Harte-Hanks daily newspapers in West Texas. She holds a B.A. degree in journalism from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University), graduating with highest honors. A native Texan and 25-year resident of San Antonio, Stevens is a co-founder and past president of the San Antonio chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute. She was also a two-term president and former Communicator of the Year of the San Antonio chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.





Deb Wells, Founder and CEO of Strokeguard

Deb WellsDeb Wells has devoted much of her 25-year healthcare career to the development and implementation of innovative cost-saving reimbursement, managed care and disease prevention solutions. Most recently, as co-founder of StrokeGuard, Inc., Wells created the concept, business model and strategic plan for a risk management company focused on stroke prevention. StrokeGuard’s proprietary algorithms, developed in collaboration with key clinicians were presented at the Disease Management Association of America Leadership Forum in 2005.

Previously, Wells was Chief Operating Officer of a $45 million Medicaid HMO, negotiating contracts that let to increased membership and creating interdepartmental teams to resolve outstanding claims issues.  Wells also served as Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Gentiva Health Services; there she secured new managed care network accounts across the United States, evaluated markets to identify key prospects, and negotiated pricing that led to profitable contracts resulting in best practices. Wells also held senior sales positions in companies specializing in infusion therapy, home care, and cardiac disease management.

Wells is the Founder and current President of the San Antonio Affiliate of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA), a premier catalyst for the professional development and leadership of women in healthcare worldwide. She is a member of HBA’s Council of Chapter Presidents, as well as a member involved in HBA’s leadership committees that in 2006 and 2007 organized global meetings attended by over 500 healthcare professionals and major corporate sponsors. Between 1999 and 2002, she served on the Board of Directors of Any Baby Can, Inc. in San Antonio, and in 2005 served as the organization’s Vice President.





D. Kirk Hamilton, FAIA, FACHA

Mr. D. Kirk HamiltonKirk Hamilton is a Fellow of the Center for Health Systems & Design and Associate Professor of Architecture at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, where his research area is the relationship of evidence-based design of health facilities and measurable organizational performance. He is also a Founding Principal of Emeritus, WHR Architects, Houston and Dallas, TX.  WHR is an internationally recognized firm that specializes in healthcare architecture.  A board certified healthcare architect with 30 years experience in hospital design, he was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows for his advocacy for excellence in architecture for health, innovations in design, for research and his visions for the hospital of the future. His experience includes professional training in facilitation, graphic recording, conflict resolution and small group dynamics through the American Leadership Forum and a Master's Degree in organizational development at Pepperdine University.

Mr. Hamilton is a past president of the AIA's Academy of Architecture for Health, as well as past president and a founding regent of the American College of Healthcare Architects. In addition to The Center for Health Design, he serves on the board of the Coalition for Health Environments Research. He was the 2003 chair of the Society for Critical Care Medicine's design committee, and serves on the faculty of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's collaboratives on improving flow in the acute care setting and transforming care at the bedside.





Cynthia Munoz, President of Munoz Public Relations

Cynthia MunozCynthia Muñoz launched Muñoz Public Relations (MPR) as a full-service public relations agency headquartered in San Antonio, Texas in 1992. Her agency currently manages projects for companies such as Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (Vox Medica, Inc.), Carrasco Pain Management and Spa, Ford Motor Company, Ford Division, South Texas Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers, Dr. Pepper (Mercury Mambo) and Merrill Lynch. MPR has the public relations, marketing, advertising, events planning and promotions experience to create and implement successful local and regional Hispanic and general market campaigns for its clients.

Muñoz is a recipient of the 2006 Compass Bank Latina Business Excellence Award, the 2007 San Antonio   Business Journal “Women in Business” award and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber Ford Fund women’s leadership award. She is a recent graduate of the UTSA “Building Business Excellence” program which promotes the growth of small businesses in South Texas.
