Cancer Care Centers of South Texas in the Medical Center to Display
Exhibit of Artwork by Those Touched by Cancer
February 15 through 26, 2010
Public Invited to Opening Exhibit February 17

Works from the Oncology On CanvasSM: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition will be on display at Cancer Care Centers of South Texas in the Medical Center February 15 through 26.

Lilly Oncology On Canvas is a biennial art competition and exhibition open to individuals touched by cancer – patients, their family members, friends, caregivers and health care professionals. Established in 2004, the competition inspires these individuals to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning. The artwork honors the journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The 2008 competition drew nearly 600 entries from the United States and Puerto Rico. Oncology On Canvas, presented by Lilly Oncology in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, is now calling for entries – from now through June 2010 – for its 2010 competition.

An opening reception will be held February 17 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the public is invited. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cancer Care Centers of South Texas in the Medical Center is located at 4411 Medical Drive, Suite 100.

“Art can be a powerful tool in improving the quality of life for many cancer patients,” said Roger M. Lyons, M.D., F.A.C.P., hematologist at Cancer Care Centers of South Texas . “The creative process can be healing for patients as well as for family and caregivers. It often enhances a patient’s coping skills and helps them maintain a positive self-image.”

Today there are approximately 12 million survivors in the United States . A survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. Advances in the treatment of cancer are evident in the ever-growing cancer survivor population as new therapies and protocols bring hope to thousands of patients.
