San Antonio Health Literacy Initiative Announces Fifth Annual Conference

The San Antonio Health Literacy Initiative, a program of The Health Collaborative, will present its fifth annual conference, “Changing Times:  Health Literacy, Politics, and Culture,” on October 1-2, 2009 at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel .
 
Keynote speaker is Norma Martinez -Rogers, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N. of the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio .  She is president of the National Association for Hispanic Nurses and 2004 Hispanic Nurse of the Nation.   She will discuss how she is working with the new administration at the national level to ensure that health literacy plays a significant role in health reform and that culture has an integral role in developing successful health policies and practices. 
 
Dr. Sanchez will speak on the importance of health literacy in Texas and how it affects comprehensive health care from physician- patient communication to understanding health benefits.  Prior to joining BlueCross BlueShield of Texas , he served as director of the Institute for Health Policy at the UT School of Public Health.  He also served as commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services from 2004 to 2006 and the Texas Department of Health from 2001 to 2004.
 
The conference is open to health care professionals, educators, health plan administrators, community service providers and others interested in health literacy.  Continuing education hours will be offered for registered nurses, social workers, certified health education specialists, dieticians and pharmacists.
 
Regular registration from August 16 through September 28 is $199 per person.  On-site registration with cash or check only is $199 per person.  A limited number of scholarships are available.  Student registration, with proof of student status, is $50 per person.
